I recently read an article by Marion Nestle, a leader in the sustainable food world, where she suggested only eating foods that have five or less ingredients in them, ideally all ingredients are whole foods and every ingredient is something that is familiar to you. Now I eat a pretty clean diet, but I wondered if I could make this happen. I wanted to see how realistic it is and if I felt a difference. To be honest, this is not extremely difficult for me considering I think about healthy eating all day long, but there are moments where I have to take an extra moment and read labels to make sure all is legit. For example, I often get a smoothie in the morning that is made of skim milk, plain yogurt and fruit…legit right? Well, I asked to look at the label of the yogurt and there was gelatin in the yogurt. GELATIN! Really? Ew! Why is there gelatin in my plain yogurt? I recently went to a health food store just to check out some labels. Why does bread need to have ingredients that I do not recognize? Why does EVERYTHING have added sugar and fat? I just do not get it.
Game on everyone….how clean is your diet? Do you know what you are really eating?
