This is quite the question these days. Many of my clients want to know if they should do a 3-7 day juice cleanse to lose weight, detox and get healthy.
Reasons to check it out:
– When you drink only juice for several days you learn what it means to feel hungry again something many of us have forgotten. Knowing what it feels like to be hungry and satiated are key to learning long term portion control.
– It is great kickstart for those of you who cannot seem to get back on track. You will likely lose some weight (it is mostly water and muscle fyi) and that can give you boost to get you on a plan that works.
– For many of you this is the most vegetables you will ever eat! Many products provide over 10 servings of vegetables and fruits in a day which is great for those of you who think you dont like vegetables. Learn to love green juice!
– For those of you who think you are sensitive, intolerant or possibly allergic to a food this will give you a chance you avoid it a few days and see how your body reacts.
Things to be aware of:
– These cleanses do not provide enough calories and not enough protein. Your body can handle it for a few days but just be aware that you are not providing your body with all it needs. If you are exercising intensely you are likely only stressing your body out rather than doing much good.
– I am not in support of supplements – many of these products provide all sorts of fancy claims and use herbs and supplements that may not be beneficial. In my opinion, if you try a brand, choose one that is made of 100% whole, organic products.
– A juice cleanse is not essential for good health. Your skin, kidneys and colon do a fantastic job of detoxing you. Eating a balanced diet, full of vegetables and proper hydration is THE way to properly keep your body balanced and not add toxins to the body. You can live a long, healthy life without ever doing a juice cleanse.
